Air bubbles in paving slabs

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

Is it normal to have a number of small (1mm diameter) air bubble holes in man-made paving slabs or am I about to buy defective slabs?

Yes - these are cast slabs. There are quite a few holes though.

you get what you pay for unfortunately
general builder, maintenance engineer, gas and plumbing installations, extensions etc

Pinholes are a good indicator of casting quality. The top quality products have few or none: the cheaper stuff can be quite honeycombed in texture.
