Whats up with this flag

Opening a crate of Inidian Stone Raj blend, i found this...

Any ideas as to why its like that? (and i did check, it is the correct way up, there is a similar one with its underside like that)

It looks like a sedimentary structure to me. They look like the sort of thing you get in bouma sequences (turbidity flows) caused by the dragging of sediments and rocks.

i was just about to say that islander!!!

but no seriously nell with a flag like that you have 2 choices
make it a bit of a feature and use it on a step or in a prominent position
or try and hide it and use it on the cuts
down to you mate
personally i would use it on a step

Yep - turbidity, also known as 'rippled bed'.

You get it with some of the poorer quality sedimentary flagstones, and not just those from India - much of the lower grade flagstone from the Pennine quarries has this kind of texture and the worst examples were often used as upright 'fencing panels' rather than flagstones, because the surface texture was considered to be too rough even for clog-shrouded feet!
