Paving - what mortar to use?

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

I intend to lay a patio using 45x45 paving slabs. I'm planning to lay a base of compacted type one, then lay the slabs on mortar on top.
Should I use sharp sand or builders sand for the mix?
Is this the best way or am I being OTT?
