I have an area about 20 sq metres that I intend to pave this summer. At present the whole area is covered in weeds. I intend to remove as many as possible prior to preparing the area, but wondered if there is a product that I can use under the slabs to permanently stop weeds coming through. If there is such a product, is is safe to use within reasonably close proximity to flower beds, or will the weedkiller be leached out of the soil and end up killing all my plants?!!

Round-Up would be fine to kill off the weeds and their root systems, and then, when you come to excavate for the new paving, you could treat the ground again.

Some folk like to use weed membranes beneath patios, but, if the bedding is cement-bound as I recommend, then there's no real need for them, unless you;ve got summat really pernicious like Japanese Knotweed.
