Garden drainage once again

Foul and surface water, private drains and public sewers, land drains and soakaways, filter drains and any other ways of getting rid of water.

I just moved into a brand new house. The back garden gets water logged after just a shower of rain. I've dug out a 400mm x 300mm drain to be filled with pea gravel and a drainage pipe. But I've notice when I was digging it out the soil was so poor very much daub compressed and left over from the builders with a token layer of top soil. Will the drainage system work with this type of soil. I was going to use an aerator and sand to help things along. Tks
I do understand what signature means

400x300mm isn't very much: a land drain would normally be deeper than that.

There's some info on the main website about how to assess the permeability of your soil using a simple percolation test. You may need to dig deeper to find a more permeable sub-layer.
