First of all what a great site - I think that I will go into business as a paving expert! my question is this, i've got an old tarmac drive, about 35sq metres, about 17 or 18 years old (was laid when the house was built) starting to look at bit tatty now. Anyway the trouble and strife wants me to bollock pave over it
If I take off the tarmac layer can I use the existing sub base? If so what thickness of laying course should I use. Note that the existing drive has been well used and has not sunk or broken up.
Many thanks

Hi,Tony McC wrote:You can re-use the sub-base if it's sound. You need a 25-40mm laying course, so you may need to reduce the sub-base to accommodate the blocks at 150mm below dpc
Great site!
We have a contractor who will be laying new block paving on approx. 85sq meters of driveway. I have read on your site that the existing base i.e. of concrete can be used as sub base, provided we remove the top 150mm to then allow the paving blocks & sharp sand. Do we need to put down black plastic sheet to block out the weeds or is this not necessary? Plus I would like to make a run way with paving blocks would this work?
Thanks!
