Best surface for veg patch pathway? - Self binding gravel?

Setts and cobbles, tarmac, asphalt, resin systems, concrete whether it's plain, patterned or stencilled, gravels, etc.

At ww w.vegmonkey.co.uk , we have some very muddy paths. I've struggled to come up with a suitable surface as we have cats next door that would 'do their business' in any bark chippings, cotswold stone chipping, loose gravel etc that we put down.

I can't use any block paving or bricks of any sort for the paths due to a) i have very expensive tastes and b) we have a drain at the end of the garden, which is partly covered by a veg bed, and a recess cover would not be suitable.

My question really is, is Self binding gravel any good, bearing in mind that the surface won't get a huge amount of use, and is quite small. The mud underneath is solid, but i expect i would have to dig down. I've seen a video of Monty Don building a path with Hoggin, but from reading previous posts on here it doesn't get rave reviews, and ends up all clayey and sludgy? Is this the general opinion

Finally, i have a quantity of slate roof tiles i'd like to use as the subbase - are they suitable, and how small to they need to be crushed. I think i read that on top of the mud, i need 10cm of hardcore and 10cm of sbg?

Any help gratefully recieved from anyone!

Thanks

A self-binding gravel over a sub-base of DTp1/2 or 50mm crusher ruin will be ideal.

Hoggin is only used in the SE of Eng-er-land because they have buggerall else and because it is just, very slightly, imperceptibly better than cow shit as a surfacing material.
