Riven flags

Hi,

Is there any tips you could give me for checking levels when laying riven flags.
I am laying stonemarket yorkstone flags and as they don't have a nice smooth surface it's difficult to know where to put the spirit level when checking levels.

You can't rely on using the spirit lkevel on a single flag, unless you use a small 'boat' level on a relatively smooth, unriven area of the flags. The best way to check laying level is to lay to a taut string line an dthen use a straightedge timber spanning 2 or more flags and then set the spirit level on top of that.

It's a bit of trial and error, repeatedly checking flags from different angles to ensure they are 'there or thereabouts' with regard to the levels. Try to set the straightedge so that it spans 'average' areas, ie, those parts of the flag's textured surface that are neither excessively high or low.

I think I have a photo, somewhere, showing a straightedge and spirit level being used to check flag level with riven flags - I'll have a look after me tea. :)

I suspected there was no sure way. Did you manage to dig out the photo ?

I can't find it, which means it must have been a normal photo that has been put "somewhere safe" rather than a digital image that would be in my archives and trackable by searching on keywords.

However, I'll get a new photo taken in the next couple of days, as a contractor mate is working on a job laying riven stone at the moment, so I can get Mrs Taz to run me up there with the digicam.

I'll try and do it tomorrow.
