Sub bases 2

Thanks all for previous assistance. Now someone else has asked me to block pave a large area to their front garden. This area is a raised lawn area and I have been told will never be foot trafficked. The chap that has asked me to do this paving job has requsted that I omit the sub-base due to it never being walked on. I am distinctly uneasey about this and wondered if anyone has any comments. The ground is chalk under lawn at present.

I personally would not do the job. The sub base is an essential part of the construction in my opinion.

well if it is rock chalk that is a very effective subbase,however how flat is it?
i might be tempted to screed the chalk with 10:1 grit sand cement and lay the blocks on that therefore making a rigid construction
we do have chalk round these parts and it is well noted that it is great for building on
all in all seems odd though??? is he trying to save a few quid?

If you do it make sure that you have it all written down so there can be no comeback.

Thanks for the replys. I can understand why the chap asked for sub base omission: the area is a raised corner of his front garden that would have no reason to be walked on. I can't do it though. It's a small town and this would be the job that haunted me. 92 sq metres of paving dipping and diving all over the place would not be good.

I'll give him a price for 75mm sub base, with a paved alternative if cost is an issue.

why does he want it block paved pagmore if there will be no foot traffic?
surely it would be more cost effective to do some sort of weed control and deco gravel?

No sub-base = no pavement. You're right to insist on using a sub-base, as your reputation takes a lifetime to earn and a second to destroy.
