i think it almost impossible to fail an nvq,i have never heard of any fails
when i was an apprentice, lads used to get fired down the road on a regular basis
i have to say though ,we had a silver trowel working with us and he was way to slow to earn a living laying bricks
and as the young lad tells me now, he is building chimneys and elliptical arches at college, why dont they just get them building normal cavity walls like they will be doing day in day out?
in 25 years i have built 2 chimneys and 3 elliptical arches, but this is the BS the course asks for
when i questioned the assessor she just shrugged her shoulders

Having worked on the NVQs, I know that there is supposed to be a hierarchy of knowledge...
Need to know
Nice to know
Not to know
... but many of the people making these decisions are far removed from site practice. Their heart's in the right place, but they often lack the day-in-day-out experience of site work and base their knowledge on how things were when they last worked on site a decade or more ago.
Which is why I want the new Hard-landscaping NVQ to be as relevant as possible, and why I publish the links and download details so that those contractors who will actually rely on this qualification for the next decade's worth of trainees can have their input NOW, before it is fully adopted, rather than feeling disappointed when it's presented as fait accomplit later in the year.
The NVQ and "route" are being reveiwed as I type. Anyone interetsed in seeing what is being proposed is welcome to email/PM me for a sneak preview, but the documents will be published for further consultation in a couple of weeks.
