Good moring tea drinkers. I'm a Handyman and have over the past 25 years tried most things, but not laying Patio's, etc. (except for family). I am having my arm twisted by an elderly couple that I have worked for many times, to lay their patio, because they know me and are suspicious of new people. The Patio is approximately 30 sq.mtrs. The Slabs they have selected are Marshalls York Stone 600 x 600, 600 x 300 and 300 x 300. It will subjected to very light pedestrian usage. The existing base is compacted clay soil with a mixture of builders waste included. Over this is currently laid about 30 mm of thumbnail size shingle. My question is, can I mix this shingle with a similar volume of sharp sand and cement, (dry, 10 to 1 ratio) and compact and lay to that. Height is not a problem but cost is.
