G'day all,

Last year we had an Indian stone patio laid and love it, but the dry sand/cement pointing never took and most of it has flaked out.

I have read about products like Geofix and the Romex variants but they all seem pretty hung up on the 5mm width and 25mm depth rule. Now we easily have this in places but not in others as the original intention was to produce a butt jointed effect but with natural variations.

Basically we are torn between kiln dried sand (cheap but need to relace every year) and risking Geofix (more expensive but should last forever). The patio is just shy of 30m2.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

do not go near geofix with a sh!tty stick it is pure rubbish
romex is the way forward ,or if your joints are too tight use kiln dried sand ,and jet wash out and replace once a year ( i have a client who has been doing this for 8 years she reckons it makes the patio look like new every time

OK point taken - Geofix out.

Back to the original question, is there a realistic alternative to the temporary solution of sand when our joints are mostly a bit narrower than 5mm?

in a word NO,i cant believe anyone would lay paving with joints as tight as that, how on earth did they lay them?
no manufacturer will guarantee any pavement mortar for under 5mm and its too tight to effectively point with mortar
kiln dried for you AFAIK
