marshall stone is sourced from quarries where there is no child labour and the workforce are treated decently given their working conditions,but expect to pay £35 a m2 for this "ethical " stone
i know of indian guys who sell for approx £15 a m2 +VAT,but the best way is if you can view the stone first
ebay is a good start for the cheap stuff if the client has no social conscience (they normally don't)
regards LLL
or look here for more suppliers :)

I buy from a firm who advertise on Ebay @ £13.50/m - by the time it's delivered it's more like £17.50/m. However, it's good stuff and I've used them on about 20 jobs now.

I'm starting to get bothered by the ethical issue, though. Having said that I've got Nike clothes and far eastern electronics. It's very likely that everyone has possessions made by kids or in a sweat shop.

Spent a (very small) bit of time researching ethical sandstones within the brochures and web sites, and found as follows:

Stonemarket and Marshalls had Ehical Trade Initiative certificates (to ensure no child labour is used).

Bradstone and StoneFlair are both covered by their parent company's (Aggregate Industries) Ehical Trading Policy (http://www.aggregate.com/media_centre/p ... award.aspx). It is suitably vague however, when I spoke to the guys at www.simplypaving.com for advice, I got directly through to the boss Philip Marshall (former Chief Executive of Marshall’s PLC, the market leader, and more recently Chairman of Stoneflair) he confirmed that child labour was not used and that the Stoneflair and Bradstone quarries had been also ethically vetted by a team from Travis Perkins.

Accordingly, I was happy to place an order for StoneFlair Indian Sandstone (Glendale) at £18/sqm and received the first two patio packs last weekend.

As for the local builders yard delivery driver who:
a) delivered my 3t of sand late, despite me asking if he could deliver mine early;
b) told me he knew I had got Indian Stone and asked how much had I paid for it (he recognised the packing crates!)
c) crowed that he had only paid £11/sqm for his....
...so from the all of the above...now guess why I didn't give you some beer money and then try to work out how I can still sleep soundly at night!!!

The quality of Injun stone in Ireland is identical to that in Britain, althjough the price is a bit steeper for reasons no-one has ever convincingly explained to me. A friend of mine in Limerick gets the grey sandstone for 30 Euro, which is roughly 5 Euro/ 2 quid more than would be paid for the same stuff in Britain.

I'll try to dig out the name of the supplier - I'm sure they're somewhere near the docks.
