A customer has asked me to tile his existing concrete step, including the sides. He has brought the tiles, havent seen them yet.
What is the best method of getting them to stick , especially to the sides, and what should I use to grout them?

just use a cement mix (3 to 1 ) and grout in the normal way using the same cement after the bedding has gone off
brush a cement slurry on to the back of the tiles and on the step just to be on the safeside I had some lift off once but never since I used the slurry
this is mouthing new quarry tiles have been layed on cement for decades

Don't use PVA, this isn't designed for outside or damp conditions...
Primer
1:1 Ronafix cement
Bedding Mortar
1 part cement
3 parts medium sharp sand
1:1 Ronafix : water
Clean and prepare the surface; eg power wash, scabble, needle gun, wire brush
Leave damp with clean water
Brush apply Primer
Lay 6mm (min) Bedding Mortar
Clean back of tile, damp and prime with Primer
Lay into Mortar
Allow 24-48 hours to gain strength and bond
Grout

with ref to the use of pva added to mortar etc. Look at Tony's page on repairing concrete.I have used it several times for outside work and it has proved very usefull.
One example was with a slotted concrete post at the end of a run of fencing which the client wanted flush!
I did the job years ago and it is still there.

I can't deny you may have had a success; however there is a distinct performance difference between PVA and our Ronafix, and all the data points to longer term durability, water resistance, bond, strength, with Ronafix than PVA.

This ronanfix is all well and good if you can buy it locally. You can't, so it is out of the question. Trying to get hold of romex for pointing a patio. Cant get it
Couldn't you just buy an end post?

If I have to adhere a slab/tile to a step where the slab overhangs the riser, I sometimes use exterior grade tile adhesive.
It is not cheap and goes off in about 20 mins. The tile/slab is not going anywhere with that stuff.
Sand/cement does not adhere it so well butt iis normally perfectly adequate. I would only use adhesive if the tile/slab is in a vulnerable position due to the cost.

No its not just you. I call the travis rip off.
The staff are rude, unhelpful, and I hate them so much, I would rather travel out of my way to get materials from another supplier than use them.
My mate had an account there and he went in to buy a 9" diamond blade. they quoted him £10. When the bill came, he was charged £70. He queried it and stated he was told £10, and they called him a liar. He closed his account, but before he did so, he gave them a big order, then cancelled it at the last minute!!!
