Hi, I'm about to start installing some land drains in my back garden. I'm connecting them into a storm water inspection chamber. Is it normal to have to consult local building control to get consent to do such a connection?

On another point, is there any rule of thumb as to whether the land drains should run across the slope of the garden or run down the slope? I can't see any difference other than running down the slope would save a little bit of excavation but running across which is my preferred option would intercept water as it permeates down the hill better.

You are supposed to notify the BCO if you make a connection onto a sewer or drain, the reason being that if we all did it tommorow the storm systems would not cope.

However in reality not everybody does as the BCO will charge you for the pleasure of making a simple job over complicated, but you didn`t here that from me

Keep it sensible, lots of granular fill and use a geotextile if the ground type requires it, all the info is on the main site somewhere.

officially you should tell someone, but as has been said there would be a fee:(
as long as you make a good connection ,no problem i would think
