I lifted my clay paved drive in order to build my extension. I originally laid the drive myself about 8 years ago. It always looked pretty good and stood the test of time quite well.
I have been far to busy to even contenplate re laying the drive and so had a couple of guys round to quote. As you can see from the picture i have graded the area, widened the drive by 3 feet, put the edgings in and laid 6" of hardcore.
I did all this back in August just to level the ground. I have been waiting since for the guy who said he would re lay to come around and start. (He hasnt been seen since)
I had another guy come around last week to take a look, he said he would start this week. He said there was no need to whack the hard core cause it had been down since August and the cars running on and off the drive would have compacted it enough.
Ok so maybe where the car runs is well compacted but what about the rest of the area? Should it be compacted before the sand goes down ? I didnt like what he was saying so i told him i would be in touch as soon as i was ready for him to start.
The area is pretty much allready prepared apart from the sand, Looking at it, would this be an expensive job to get someone in to finish? I really wish i had the time but i dont. I just want to get the new carpets down in the house.
Im sick of treading dirt in.

do you want a job down here???
i would have said about £350 labour, but you still got extra sand ,blocks,a wacker, kiln dried and some sort of waste removal to pay for on top of that

Well the gypo's came around today and said they would give it a lovly 1" covering of the black stuff for "tree hundred pouunds" and take away all the old block paving "cause you cant re lay it once you took it up mister" for £50.00
Total £350.00
does this sound a good deal; and the best way to go for a quick fix then i can get my carpets down for crimbo?

1" of blacktop lol........
STEER WELL CLEAR! For that area, I'd be specifying an 80mm coverage of tarmac - 50mm binder and 30mm surface course.
A LOT more than £350!

Dont worry i have no intentions of letting them tarmac my drive and releive me of my clay pavers.
Funnily enough they did a drive up from me, well they lowered his curb. they took out the kerbs, cut into the path about 8" then re laid the kerbs they took out but on their sides.
Does that make sence to you all ? i will take a piccie and post so you can all have a laugh..

Remember back in December when i said i needed my drive doing but didnt have time ?
Well today was nice and sunny so i thought sod it. Tis 2/3 done
The pavers were lifted before i built the extension so they need a good clean, Just in case you were wondering why they look a little dirty.
One question though, the drive is 90 degres to the road, but the house is set at an angle to the drive. i started againth the edgings so it is square on at the sides and the road, but where it meets the house the herringbone pattern obviously runs out.
Have i done correctly by squaring against the edgings and road? It looks nice when viewed from road but not so nice from front door.
Cheers guys.
Picture taken just now. i was going to get the flood lights out and try to finish it but the wife went MAD... :;):
