hello gang, love the site but am a newbie in the Cabin.
friend has asked me to use slate tiles, 600x600 to cover a grotty concrete back patio (5m x 3m). Trouble is, a) never laid slate b) they are really thin (20mm) c) his patio doors open onto the patio with only 40mm clearance.
Now would a thin cement base still be ok..? or would an exterior tile adhesive laid with notched trowel be ok (as tile shop suggested.) ?
both sound a bit dicey so any suggestions welcomed!!!

i think a full mortar bed would be the best solution.exterior tile adthesives might not last really cold conditions but i dont kno tha much about them, a full mortar bed would suport the flags well and would probably be the best solution. to use tile adthesive you would probably need to lay a full conctete slab in prep for flags. this would give you a solid faily flat surface to lay the flags on. its alot of extra work and possibly over engineered, whereas you could use the mortar bed method. im sure others will give there ideas...

Yep, you can use Ronafix (liquid), with cement sharp sand to make a 6mm thick (thin) bedding mortar - follow our mix design A.
Also use Ronafix with cement (1:1) as a bonding to concrete (prep. it first) and back of slate.
Call us if you need help, or location of nearest stockist.
