I am planning to use clay pavers from Chelmer Valley Brick for a drive project, and would quite like to seal them against oil from cars etc.

However the comment from the supplier was that clay needs to breath and that if a sealer is added, it will encourage soluble salts to
rise and be trapped under the sealant.

Does anybody have a view or experience of this? I would like to go for a matt finish if possible

thanks

I have sealed a fair few drives, though mostly concrete paviour. Efflorescence can be a problem with new blocks. I would leave them down a few months to let them weather and lose any salts, then have them cleaned and sealed. definitely matt!

If you've got leaky cars - get them fixed or park on the road.

I am currently using sealants from Plaspertex http://www.plaspertex.co.uk/index.cfm

Phone them and talk to Brian for good technical help. They seem to work well, and Plaspertex will pre-mix the matting agent which is so much easier. I haven't used all the sealants out there, so I can't tell you what's good and what's not. These are the solvent based sealants that form a protective layer on top, and if you apply them right also soak into the sand and lock it into place.
