Insurance - Employing a builder

I'm doing a lot of the work involved laying a patio in my garden, but I have agreed to hire a retired builder on a daily rate to do the skilled bits - I am just labouring and doing the non-critical stuff. Do I need to worry about insurance - not national insurance - but would I be liable if there happened to be an accident?

its not so much if he has an accident, its what happens if he kills someone else
he/you should prolly have public liability but as you are doing DIY i'm not sure how the law stands on this
best to check with your insurance company, tell them you are doing diy with a retired person helping you
cheers tony

If your neighbour injures himself whilst on your property, and you're found to be negligent, then your public liability insurance should respond.
It's ALWAYS best to run these things past your insurer/broker & ask for written confirmation of the position - if he ruptures a disc lifting something that you ask/tell him to, and can't walk/play veterans football/service the old lady, then you could be in the frame for the compensation that he might want......
