Patio foundation??

I have served under an expert bricklayer and builder for four years and have a further 2 years experience in business myself laying patios. I was taught that using hardcore really isn't necessary at all on foot-traffic only areas, instead using 75-80mm of 8:2:1 Granite Sand:Building Sand:Cement dry mix. We use geofabric to prevent material pumping and would normally only use whacked hardcore to fill in 'soft windows' at excavation stage.

To date i have never had a single complaint regarding paving stability and i wondered what you all might think about this? Is hardcore base necessary on pedestrian only areas?

I believe that geography may (might, maybe, possibly) have something to do with the differing technique. I know plenty other landscapers in the Glasgow area who use the same technique.

Check the main site under sub-base. It basically agrees that a foundatoin isn't always necessary. But it does very much depend on the ground.

Its really a case of each to their own and what works for you. I was taught to use a hardcore base and thats the way I do it. And ive also never recieved a complaint.
