Hiya I`ve been asked by a customer to lay a new drive with indian flag stones 6 random sizes!
I phoned the supplier today and he say`s they are only 30mm thick, Im thinking they are to thin as drive will have to cars one being a range rover!! Is it possible to lay drive with indian flags "600mm x 600mm" being largest size on 50mm sharp sand mortar bed on top of 150mm compressed type 1? Any advice will be great! Cheers
i did a drive recently like this under instruction but i used 100mm crushed concrete ,100mm mot ,then 100mm concrete bed with the flags fully bedded on,i also selected the thicker flags for the drive and left the tiles for the patio
hasnt cracked yet and he drives a jeep cherokee
although like i say i was asked to do it so i did my best,it wasn't my choice IYKWIM
btw it was a full wet concrete bed,not dry

Cheers guys was wot I thought tony Im a bit dubious but it`s what they want, Wet mix is wot i was going to use, sharp 4 cement 1! Is there a smaller slab I could use maybe ! less surface area = nay movement!! Thanks again K :O
i find the 600 by 600 and the 900 by 900 are normally thicker,i think they save all the crap for small stuff i.e 300 by 300,alos less joints means less chance of lateral movement

Thanks again tony I`ve just been to see sandstone @ yard, very nice we can`t usually get it down here {south east coast} Your right larger pieces are thicker, He is going to make up meterage I want with thickest pieces (40mm +). I was thinking of pointing with silver sand, cement mortar, with black/charcoal dye! any suggestions? Also Could you check my calculations: 100m2 @ 150mm deep = 15m3 = 25 ton! i think it might be nearer 30 tonnes (metric) but you can probably get a 20 t load and see what it looks like after that to make sure
i know the gaffer tony recomends pointing with black dye mortar but personally i dont like the look of it,it looks a bit mickey to me.
its all personal choice,but if you get a shower whilst doing it you are in it big time,with dye running everywhere
plus 100m will probably take 2 days or more to point with mortar so you will need to gauge any mortar carefully to make sure the colour doesnt vary(my mate ben has a bad habit of knocking up the last bucket on a job 3 times stronger than the rest)

Always gauge everything mate, hate it when you see different levels in brickwork etc, thanks for advice your doing gr8 job while gaffers away !! I bought his book yesterday, always handy!
