Hi

I'm getting myself all confused with what I need for my sub base. I'm trying to reuse some precast concrete flags 600x600x50, the area is approx 10m sq and may occasionally be used to park a car. Do I need 100mm type1 then sharp sand (or sand cement mix?) or can i go with a semi dry concrete mix? Also could you give me some advice about buying materials - what area does a jumbo bag from a builders merchants/wickes etc cover? are they 1 ton in weight

many thanks for your help

if you smash your slabs up into fist sized pieces they should be ok ,but really you want 100mm of type 1 on top of them wacked as well, giving you 150 mm sub base
1 bulk bag is roughly .5 m3 so for 100mm times 10m2
is 10 timmes .1 = 1 times .5 = 2 bulk bags
so 2 bulk bags of type 1 should do it
hope this helps

Bulk bags give you somewhere around 800 - 900 kilos. Their not a perfect ton

thats right stuarty, theiving ba**ards that BMs are, when it first went from volume of aggregate to tonnes ,they said it was to help the builder work things out???!?!?!?!how exactly??
then they said "ahh sometimes the sand is wet when we pack it so it may dry out lighter" really??
the bottom line is it is more expensive than it used to be,and you can only expect about .9t in a bag ,incidentally some merchants are better than ohers ,in my town b/fields do bigger bags than dandys
because they fill them there selves
cheers tony

Aye our local Jewsons fill their bags themselves, theres been a couple of times when you get it loose that you definatly get more than a ton.
