Hi,
I've started on a tarmac driveway replacement project, with the advice I've read on this fantastic site.
However I've become stuck after some hard work removing the tarmac. My hardcore base is at least 20in deep, but is not remotely level, the peak (drive center) is about 4in above the correct level I have achieved at the ends of the drive.
I've tried to address this with a pick axe and have realised this is just not going to achieve results.
I think I could move forward through hiring a digger/skip - but is this unrealistic for a DIY approach ?
I have not had much luck finding a previous post which helps me dcide if this is the right solution or determine the skill level required.
Any advice would be really welcome.
Thanks

It depends how big the area is really. If it isnt all that huge an area I would persevere ( sp ? ). Id assume your putting all the stuff you cant use into a skip allready so you would just need the mini digger.
The last time I hired a digger ( I usually borrow the works one :p ) it cost me around £140 for the weekend if i remember correctly.
Also, while they can make a job 10 times easier, they can also make it 10 times harder if you aint careful with them! Watch out for people, its not nice to be struck by those things, i should know - 3 times ive been skelped by some reckless oaf in the cab :p

thanks, is there a good technique to using the digger to ensure a level the base. I can imagine that it must be quite tricky to enusre it is within a few inches.
.. or do I rely upon digging further than I want to go and then filling with fresh base before compacting ?
PS. my drive is only about 60sqm.
