Hi, I am looking at getting my driveway paved with Tegula block paving, approx 72m2. The guy has qouted for "sub base layer then lay block paving on a cement base, to prevent subsidence." I thought it was done on a sand base?

Does this sound Ok, and how deep should each of these layers be?

I have been qouted £5000 for this, I think this is price is Ok, any views.

Thanks

Steve

wrong wrong wrong mate
i have seen lads put 100mm leanmix down as the sub base, and although this is not strictly right it is better than nothing
block paving is meant to be semi flexible ,if the blocks cannot move at all they are likely to break
BTW i have seen a drive laid on sand/cement and it looked terrible
if they install their edgings/kerbs correctly and use geo fabric and a 150mm sub base there wont be any movement to speak off
problem with cementing them down is that it is final ,nothing can be rectified the next day
see herefor details if you really want rigid
cheers tony
oh yes £5000 sounds great ,£10,000 sounds even better ,whats the area??? lol

If the sub base is constructed correctly and the blocks are laid in the propper fashion it wont subside. The blocks are laid on sand, then whacked once they are jointed. Only the edging course should be on a concrete bed and then haunched, the rest of the drive should be on sand.

The depth of the layers should be 150mm for the sub base, 40mm max for the bedding sand, then the block ontop of that.

As for the quote, im no good at pricing, one of the other lads will be able to comment further :)

This was the first qoute, from a guy I know has a good reputation around Carlisle, so I will ask him to explain why he wants to use the cement base.

I also intend asking for some examples of his work I can go and look at, where he has used this type of base.

I've got someone else coming tomorrow night, so I'll ask them what base they would use.

Thanks for your quick response.
