why transverse?

Hi,

Probably a stupid question (sorry), but I was looking at http://www.pavingexpert.com/pccflag1.htm because I was wondering why the standard pavement 'design' is of transverse layout.

Can someone enlighten me as to why that seems to be the 'standard' for pavements as supposed to a chequer board (chess board) layout?

Because it gives an interlocking pattern at right angles to the direction of traffic flow. This means any slippage of the paving units is more or less restricted to one direction (side-to-side), whereas a stack-bond (chess board) layout allows slippage in two directions (up-and-down and side-to-side).
