Hi,
Firstly, this is an excellent site! Thanks for all your work.
I'm planning a patio that will be close to the corner of our house. I intended to use a narrow splash strip to help with the problems of downpipes and cables, paving round a corner and blending the colour of light grey slabs against red bricks. But I read on another post that you disapprove of splash strips. How, then, do I best deal with paving around downpipes? And as I plan to butt joint slabs, how do I finish the edge against the house. Is butt jointing OK in this case? I'm using Bradstone textured 450x 450 paving.
Hope my questions don't show me up too much as a rookie.
Thanks,
Adam

Cut the flags so that they fit around the downpipes - simple! And butt jointing is fine against the masonry.
To make life easier for yourself, consider using an edge course of block pavers against the house. These are easier to lay and to cut, they'll provide a more gradual transition between the grey flags and the red hued masonry, and they will make it much simpler when you come to lay the flags.
