Hi all, I am looking to build a couple of steps into raised patio doors while laying my slabs. Bear with me here, but wifey decided she would like the steps edged with oak sleepers. My plan was to build the sleeper frame , backfill and bes slabs down flush with top of sleepers. Looking to do two steps, base step will be 2800 wide by 1200 from house, second step will be 2000 wide by 600 from house. Going to fix sleepers in frame and bolt to house and maybe bolt to existing concrete base.
Question, ?? Can i use old step, broken concrete to give a hardcore base and then top with type one , finishing with sharp mix to bed on. ?
Or should look to backfill with concrete ?. Thanks J

You should be OK re-using the salvaged old step as long as it is fully broken up and punnelled down well so you can be sure there'll be no settlement once your new step is built.

If in doubt, use a 'lean mix' concrete for the top 100mm of backfill.
