Hideous white pointing - why?

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

Some utility companies have truly messed up the pointing of ancient yorkstone pavements in our area. Not only is the pointing smeared on, but the result is brilliant white, rather than grey.

Is the white colour to do with the mix? Or the grades of sand and cement used?

Thanks

Thanks Tom. Not sure why the picture isn't working but in general terms, can you tell me why pointing might come out white rather than grey? Is it to do with the mix? Or with the grades of sand and cement used?

Probably used a pale sand and then went OTT with the cement, partly because they thought it would make for a better mortar, and partly because no-one ever properly trains these people in the correct methods of reinstatement.
