Flower bed filler !

Foul and surface water, private drains and public sewers, land drains and soakaways, filter drains and any other ways of getting rid of water.

Has anyone got any suggestions on substances to fill a newly created flower bed?
The bed measures 25ft long by 1 ft wide and needs a depth of 30cm.
I've worked out that it needs about 3 tons of top soil ! and at £40 a ton it seems a waste as I'm only going to put some hardy type a bush or shrub in it as a border between two properties.And something that will help drainage.
So I'm looking for suggestions for something cheaper I can buy to fill the bottom, and then just have a layer of top soil above.

Well-rotted manure. Mature compost. I have around 3 cubic metres of exceptionally mature compost that I have to get rid of because my compost heap has banned - if you're anywhere near Warrington.....

Hi Tony,
I actully work in Warrington and live in Preston, so if you don't mind giving it away your offer sounds ideal and I have access to a transit!

Excuse my metric stupidity, but is that just under a ton of mature compost you've got then?

Just need a way of contacting you to arrange the collection.

To aid drainage I would include horticultural grit in the mix, approx a barrowload per sq metre, i.e. in this case about two and a half, and you could maybe put 2 or 3 cms of larger pebbles in the bottom.
