Hello,

Recently, we paid to have a patio laid with indian stone slabs. I wasn't happy with the flaky finish on them, but the builder said it is how they are. After a couple of weeks of being in place, there are damp spots appearing all over the place, coming up from underneath I expect. I was told on a gardening forum that this is from the way they have been laid and it is incorrect.

Obviously, I'm heading for an argument with the builder here, so I'm hoping someone can tell me more about what is wrong and what should have been done.

There are approx 70 slabs in total and lots of them have this damp issue. We were charged £780 just for the slabs, which now seems a lot given the quality of finish to them.

Can anyone help?

I have photos but this board won't accept Google drive URLs it seems.

In the last 18 months I've had 2 Indian Sand Stone patios laid, 1 on a solid base the other on Dot/Dab, which sounds like the way yours was laid.
Two different builders.

My patio which was laid Dot/Dab has for more circular staining coming through than the solid base one.
Oddly the staining on the Dot/Dab took over a year to start showing itself.

When I realised (after doing some research) why this staining was appearing I tried sealing the slabs with a Sealer/Colour Enhancer, this did help to tone down the staining but didnt hide it completely.

As I've mentioned above though, the patio laid on a solid base also shows some staining coming through on certain slabs but not as much as the Dot/Dab patio.
I think a lot to do with staining seeping through is down to how the cement/sand is mixed, maybe too wet or too much cement ?
