Clean then grout or grout then clean?

Patio flagstones (slabs), concrete flags, stone flags including yorkstone and imported flagstones.

I've finished re-laying my slate paving and now need to grout. I'm planning on using Pavetuf jointing compound - is it best to clean the slabs first (they're pretty filthy from prior use) or best to grout and then clean?
