Hi,

I'm planning to lay some 50mm sawn york sandstone flags to form a 2.6 x 7m patio this Bank Holiday weekend.

I'm using courses 600 and 450mm wide and some of the 600's are 900 long, so I'm going to bed the flags on a bound, 1:10 bedding layer, roughly 35mm thick.

The patio is on a limestone screed/beam and block construction

I've worked with unbound bedding layers in the past, but not with a bound bedding layer.

Although the stone is sawn nominal 50mm, the thicknesses do vary a little (45-50mm) as they're quarry seconds

What's the best way to prepare the bedding layer? Do I wack and screed it off (adjusting it for different thicknesses), stamp it down and level it or leave it a little less compacted?

I can find lots of info on the site about preparing unbound bedding, but not so much about bound. I did find this video but it would be great to get your expert advice: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIen0LlzMN0

Also - there are free edges on 3 sides so I'm thinking of using and SBR bond bridge on these - I've seen the page about bond bridges, but any views/tips would really welcome,

many thanks,

Richard

Hi grahal2,

thanks for that link, however I already looked through that page in detail and it's not clear if I need to use a wacker on a cement bound bedding layer to compact or if trampling it down is enough for an area like this?

I know there's a lot of people on the forum and site with a great deal of experience in laying various types of paving and I'd really appreciate their views on this as I'm going to have to let the hire company know one way or another soon,

many thanks,

Richard
