We had 50sqm of mid-grey granite slabs installed late last year - just before the weather went really wet. So now the sun has bothered to turn up, I wanted to get around to sealing them.
I’d specified VDW 815 Plus for the 3mm jointing, but when applying, the four lots of 10kg seemed to disappear under the slabs, so it covered about 10sqm. I wintered the joints with paving sand to stop ingress of seeds etc and was looking to seal with Adseal Stone and Slate Protector. APART from the internal argument to somehow get the granite looking darker (wet look without the wet-look), it seems that when applying the VDW, there are some dark blotches left behind on some of the edges. I believe these may be from underwetting the granite during application, and lack of efficient cleaning off of the residue afterwards...
So, is there a way to remove this darker blotching - a resin cleaner?. I didn’t want to seal it in with the sealant. Or would it be necessary to replace the slabs? Or, would the slight darkening due to the sealant, possibly hide the resin...
We've encountered loads of problems with resin staining on Granite whether it be 2 part epoxy resins or the single part polymerics and have spent hours/days over the last few years painstakingly trying to remove the resin with all types of products with no joy at all. My advice would be it will be a lot quicker and cheaper if it is not a large area, to replace the paving. We have totally eliminated any problems on Granite now by getting the paving pre-sealed using Drytreat Stainproof, we now never get any resin staining or picture framing. If you did not want to pay for the pre-seal paving NCC Streetscape do a product called vdw 950 Stain Protect Plus 3 in 1 which is an easy to apply breathable impregnating water based sealer which will help to protect the slab from resin staining before applying the vdw 815
Ah, that’s unfortunate. I’m going to see if this AdSeal is of the impregnating type, with a view to replacing those slabs. Many thanks for your valuable information – if only VDW had mentioned it’s best to apply a protector before using their 2-part jointing compound.

well known like black limestone for all sorts of user problems
