hi peeps-new to this forum but enjoying it already.
I have a new build 3 bed detached with a 180sq mtr rear garden with an uphill slope away from the house, I would like to patio as much as possible but at some point there will be a need for a retaining wall.
I can either do this with custom made gravel boards which I can make at work with more steel inside them or with sleepers, if using sleepers I do prefer the vertical look.
I'm lost on what to do with drainage,do I put in a soak away,do I lay land drains-if so where do I channel the water? my garage has 2 downpipes (1 front and 1 back) and there is 1 downpipe at the back of the house, could I connect into them?
here is a few pics....

If there's tumbleweed, then it usually suggests you've not explained the problem adequately.
To my eye, there isn't the sort of height difference across the garden to warrant the use of upright sleepers, so I'd look to use the siompest possible rtainer, possibly a dwarf wall, or, as you suggested, simple gravel boards. Gabions could be even simpler.
As for drainage, that would all depend on your final layout. You need to detrmine where drainage points would be, or whether linear drainage or even a fin/fliter drain would be a better option.
Start with a plan....everything flows from that.
