Installing porcelain tiles over existing patio

Hi

Would appreciate some advice please.

My outdoor patio area is yorkshire stone but is very tired. Would it be possible to install 20mm porcelain tiles straight over the existing stone using the thin bed adhesive method described on this site, or would I need to remove all stone and lay a sub base before installing?

The problem you would have is that yorkstone will be relatively uneven, so you would need to rely on the bedding to regulate that uneveness, which straightaway rules out thinset adhesive: you'd need a full depth mortar, which then creates the problem of having your paving level too high relative to the DPC.

Best to take up the yorks, see if you can get a few quid for them, and use that money to install a proper sub-base or, preferably, a good solid base.
