Hi all
This is a weird one the pointing has broken down in about three places it’s only been pointed a couple of weeks.
I thought it may be a rocker that’s cracked the jointing as the lady did stood on one not long after it had been laid no movement at all.
I looks like it’s turned to sand can push a screwdriver straight into it and into the bedding but there only about 300 mm long and either side is solid this area was where I actually started the pointing so it’s not as if it’s been awhile since it was mixed it’s fresh.
But a lots of dog urine Stains.
Is it possible that after I finish pointing the dog has peed on it a couple of places it’s a big dog big pee before it is set and has attacked the cement just can’t make this one out?
The paving is Brazilian black slate laid on 6 inches of compacted type I
Bedding 6 to 1 sharp sand laid wet full bed 35 to 50 mm and a bond bridge mixture to the back of slabs prior to laying
Pointing mix 4 to 1 soft sand, semidry with plasticiser. Whilst pointing I continually misted the area.
The area i’m talking about was at the start of the pointing so a fresh mix was being used, also the customer had pre-wetted the paving the previous night.

What do you normally use when pointing plastering sand or floor sharp or a mixture with soft.
Your advice is much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Mark

The term "semi dry" is your problem.
best to use a wet mix. Get some easijoint, or easipoint, both use different methods of application, both seem to be bullet proof.
oh, and keep the bloody dog off. That wont help!

Dan could be right. How dry was your semi-dry? There has to be suffient moisture to hydrate the cement content, and, all too often, pointing mortars with no added water do not have enough moisture to create a decent mortar.

However, if you've batch mixed, why is it only patches of the mortar that are failing? That suggests contamination, and if anything with sugar got into the uncured mortar, that would be enough to balls-up the cure. It *could* be dog pee, especially if the dog is old with iffy kidneys (summat that seems to affect Labradors, apparently) or it could be the property owner or their family slopping a soft drink.
