First time paver needing guidance!! - Sub base issues

Hi there,

I'm a first time paver needing some help!

I've recently removed some old 200x100x65 block paving and am in the process of replacing with new 200x100x50 over an extended area. For the extension I've compacted 3in of MOT grade 1. I've then added sand to the entire area and compacted considerably before installing rails and a sand screed to achieve a nice and flat desired base height. I estimate that the total sand base is up to 4in in depth due to the huge difference in original levels.

My question is; Is this too much? This is a patio area for foot traffic, garden furniture, BBQ etc, nothing of any great load.

Also, I'm looking to finish off with sika sand (compacted over) and water seal to give a good finish. Will these add anything to prevent potential movement given that the patio perimeter is between brick walls (house and garage) or concreted/haunched edging.

I'd really appreciate some help with this before it's too late!!

4inch is way too much. 50mm max
Scrape sand off, add some more subbase, then re apply the sand

^^ what DDD said, 100mm will fail sure as eggs are eggs

Thanks fellas. All sand removed and replaced with sub base. Aiming for ~25mm sand.
