Not certain, but it might be summat to do with the H_U_G_E numbers of Russian would-be spammers trying to access the board over the past fortnight.

I've blocked dozens of the buggers, and when I got back from Ireland last Sunday night, the inbox was choked with 'on hold' applications of which 90% (at least) had Russian origins.

I think the sheer number of attempted users overwhelms what is, it has to be acknowledged, very old and flaky software. The error message I keep getting refers to "too many simultaneous connections".

I'll ask Ian to take a look but I fear the long term solution is for me to sell summat to raise the funds to pay the 5 grand I've been quoted to build an all-new all-singing-and-dancing Brew Cabin.

As Sean said, I'd chip in and for all of the great info on here wouldn't think it would take long to raise 5k.

Very much appreciate your generosity but let me have a think about it.

What would be the opinion if we had a 'corporate sponsor'? I might be able to get a big name in the trade to fund the re-development in return for having their name/brand prominently positioned on the Brew Cabin walls.

Or would that piss off people and deter their competitors from posting?

No: to take the existing database (which IanP has miraculously kept alive well beyone it's allotted time) and use it with a whole new front end/Interface which, they reckon, will do everything the current system does, but in a more stable and sustainable manner, and offer loads of other gimmicks and whizzbangs, such as polls, avatars (Oh! FFS!!!), easier photie uploads, and even a spill chucker!

The look would be pretty much the same, so that it matches the main site, but all the buttons, icons, emojis, etc., would be more in keeping with 2017 rather than 1997 when all this nonsense started!

I noticed in the last couple of days that the database load had gone a bit OTT so I looked at the logs and found that there were a few 'bots crawling through the Brewcabin and indexing all its posts. These weren't even google bots so I've added some code to deny them access to the forum pages and the load has immediately dropped.

This is a very popular site and generates a lot of interest from some of the miscreants out there :-o

For about the one-thousandth, nine hundred and seventy second time, I am incredibly indebted to you, Ian.

Maybe I can coax another 12 months out of this creaky old system.....

I have found an open source forum package that says it can directly import from IB - I will have a look to see how viable it is
