Catalytic converter - Merc sprinter

Had my catalytic converter, diesel particulate filter & the whole exhaust system stolen.
They took it off the van in the middle of the night with my house only being 2 steps away on private driveway. Insurance claim in the region of £4000 including hire van.

Am going to the exhaust flanges welded on and a catloc fitted. Any other security measure that others know off ??

Weld the exhaust flanges,on the threads so it cant be undone.

It's come to something when they're nicking parts off a van! Siphoning off diesel used to be about as bad as it got, but with vehicles becoming wheeled technology more and more, I suppose it was only to be expected.

What to do other than a big alarm system, flood lights and/or a big, underfed dog (or geese - even better than a dog!)?

A few years back a local coachworks had 6 vans done over a weekend all 6 were just chassis cabs waiting for bodies.

Cats are worth a fare bit due to the titanium and other precious metals in them

You cant weld the flange incase it warps you could put welds on the end of the threads

Or fit straight through pipe and get the van remaped with the dpf programmed out

The catalytic converter is full of precious metals. They get upwards of £200 for it especially if it is original manufacturer catalytic and not an after market one.
Then cause £4000 insurance claim.

I would have thought with being paid by cheque etc that a scrap metal merchant knows that its stolen.

Loads of merc sprinters have been done round here.

I cant help but think some of the less respectable scrap dealers probably still pay cash..... local van hire place had all the spare wheels nicked from the transits a few years back that's why I keep mine inside

With far too few exceptions, scrap yards and 'reclaimed building materials yards' are still prone to becoming dens of iniquity.

Despite the outlawing of the cash economy in scrap yards, we all know it still goes on, especially if you have 'what is called 'slummy' in Liverpool (big, thick lecky cable) or CI in the form of MH covers or gully gratings.
