Hi, I have searched the site and read a lot about pointing but am still not sure what would be best for our situation. I was quite interested in Geofix as being easy to use, but have read that it is not very good.

We have a flag patio to repoint. After jet washing, a lot of the old mortar came out (two years old)

The patio is a combination of cast flags edged with smaller terracotta type blocks.

If it is the best thing we can use a semi dry mix but if there is a better and easier way we would like to try this.

Feedback on products/type of pointing to achieve a good and lasting finish much appreciated.

Great and iformative site by the way!

Thank you for your reply Sue, was kind of hoping to get an independant view of a few different products, including the best way of using semi dry mortar, but I will certainly have a look at easipoint too.

GeoFix - shite. Nothing but trouble, and expensive trouble at that. Doesn't bond to the paving. Alage and mosses travel for miles just to settle on to its surface. Falls apart if squirted with a water pistol and is totally useless against a power washer!

Sika Pavefix - highly variable results. Doesn't seem to cope well with the damp, but not sure why.

Cementone WJC - looks promising but only started a trial 3 weeks ago so too early to say for definite.

Romex - best I've ever used, and by quite some way. Leaves other polymerics in the shade. Superb bonding; clean moss/algae resistant finish; choice of colours/shades; no more expensive that GeoFix Shite; can be used damp or dry.

Semi-dry mortars. Great if you have the patience and steady hand needed. I tend to prefer semi-dry mortars for pointing in late spring, summer and into the early part of autumn, but if the flags are damp at all, it can become a bit messy unless you're very careful. 3 years ago, I would have suggested semi-dry pointing to everyone, but given the superb results achievable by the most cack-handed of DIYers using Romex, I'm now recommending it as my first preference for prestige patio work.

Incidentally, I'm still looking for contractors willing to use Romex for trial pavements that can be photo'd for this website.

I have an offer from a Rochdale-based contractor to monitor the use of Romex on a sandstone patio, but that sett job of yours, John, would have been superb. Still: no use skrieking o'er spilt milk, as they say around here.

If you, or any other contractor, has a suitable job for Romex, just give me a shout and I'll see if we can help.
