I am proposing to lay a patio in an area that has the roots from two silver birch trees crossing it. The roots have actually 'surfaced' in places so I know for a fact that these will have to dealt with along with the ones I can't see. What would be the best way to deal with this situation?. I am planning follow the advice given in your main section but this problem may need a modification to the method. Thanks in advance for any help.

Chop them out! Make sure you go down atleast 6'' from what will be the finished height of your patio.

Thanks for that. Are the trees likely to suffer as a result of removing some of the roots? I'm guessing that they can sustain a certian amount of root damage. If there is a too greater risk then i may consider another option e.g decking. However, i will have Tony's suggestion (from the main site) of diesel and matches standing by.

Native trees should be ok. Wouldn't recommend diesel and matches, that may well kill them!

RMS,
Thanks for your response. The diesel and matches would have been for the decking.
