Terracing garden (retaining soil)

On our new build we have cut some 1-2 meters into a hillside over a width of around 20 meters, its all thick heavy clay soil.



looked a bit like this. The question is what is the best way to terrace off the land upslope of the house. Its come up from original ground level a couple of feet and is pretty well waterlogged the whole time. I would like to use slopped back grassed banks and was thinking of using landscape matting such as GeosynLandlok to support the soil while the planting establishes.
However am I likely to need something more substantial? I was thinking of putting gabions round the back of a carport to protect it though I'd rather not run them accross the whole site.
For the drainaige I was going to run lateral gravel field drains to a deep gully on the west (left) of the site where it can run happily down to some woodland and better draining soil.

Gabios sound good. It's difficult to say what might work best elsewhere on the site, without seeing it 'in the flesh'. I think you need to ask a couple of local groundworks contractors to take a look.
