Basically the customer wants their driveway gates to open inwards past 90 degrees.

Only way to acheive this without moving the posts or buying bigger gate is to fit the hinges diagonally through the posts. Not too big a deal but this now means the gate sit atop a driveway drainage gulley and drop bolts wont obviously drop.

Can't cut the gulley to accomodate drop bolts or I'd be shearing through the slats in the gulley and they'd bend under load so I need to replace the top of the central gulley with sheet metal of some description.

Any ideas?

why do they want that anyway ? how thick is the top of the gully ? what about bolting a bit of steel to the underside of it then making some holes for the bolts

If they only need to open one way, why did you bolt between the posts instead of behind? Bolting them behind means they will open fully inwards, and your dropbolt will avoid the channel. Simples

Cos that's what I quoted for. I wanted and they wanted it all linear. There wasn't any mention from them or in my quote that they would open beyond 90 degrees. It just didn't occur to me that it'd be a problem as the driveway is easily large enough not to need it.

A lesson learnt.....

I think people automatically assume that gates will open 180 degrees, that looks a tidy job. to my mind they are just being pedantic.
however more detail for the quote next time !
