I am laying flag paths / patio area around the side and rear of my house and struggling with corners. Laying slate at suggested 1/40 falls away from the dpc rear patio is 2m wide and side path is 1m wide so one has 50mm fall and the other 25mm so how do they tie in without a step? Do I lay my side path to a 1/20 fall? To complicate issues I have a manhole cover on the corner where the 45degree mitre type joint will run.

You need to cut the slabs that meet the patio across their diagonals so that they fold into place. If you look around pedestrianised areas you will see examples of how this is done.
As for the manhole an image would be useful.
