Feel your pain though. Few years back I was living in a rented house in Twickenham. There was a beautiful willow tree in the back garden. Used to enjoy sitting in the garden with a can after a hard day admiring the thhing.

My next door neighbour was this busy body. My wife couldnt stand her but I put up with her to keep the peace. Anyway, this woman was always asking If I could cut the tree down because it was growing to close to her fence. I always said no...then one day she was replacing some fence panels and she asked if she could use my access. I said, of course no problem. I got back from work and the tree was gone. Wife had to hold me back from going round there. In the end I went round after a couple of days when I was calmer (probably a good thing). She claimed that the fencing guy did it without her knowledge.....total bullshit. But jeez was I angry

one thing you cannot buy is good neighbours
I have 2 fantastic neighbours and due to that wont be moving anytime soon

I did have a rental place with a nutty neighbour and she drove me nuts with her various demands , hedge removal,tenant was smoking in his garden at 6 pm at night,tenant was talking on his mobile telephone at 8 pm at night in his garden
the tree was too tall (my tree so dont worry mrs busybody)

lot to be said for detached houses IMHO
