Hi folks,
I urgently need to finalize my plans for our drive which I will be doing myself please see image of plan at the bottom of the page(the entrance to the drive way is at the bottom).
Being Bohemian types we are not looking for a nice "neat and tidy" sort of drive. So want to have a Suds compliant gravel drive using a plastic gravel grid and paving where the two vehicles rut up the surface the most.The total area is approx 34 m2 with the paving area 13m2
We want to create paving where the gravel sits in the grout lines so effectively there will be stepping stones in a sea of gravel. However I cannot find any mention in the archive of stepping stones in a driveway and the nearest thing is seams to be crazy paving.
To achieve the stepping stone effect my original idea was to dig down around 200mm and get ready mix in for the first pour of 90mm then I thought I may be using irregular sized stone in the region of 75 to 100mm thick I would lay them in a 2nd bed of self poured concrete and adjust them to the right level thus ensuring each stone is encased in concrete and wont move! is this a totally outrageous idea and if so why and what would be a better more economical way to achieve this effect?

for any kind of stepping stones I would prepare a subbase of 100mm of type 1 then bed each stepping stone onto 50mm of bedding making sure to haunch the edges
then infill with gravel or whatever

I am still confused because what I am proposing are stepping stones for a drive, and this site recommends 100mm minimum concrete base on top of a 100mm minimum sub-base for a flagstone drive, so should I not be going down that route?

I cannot fathom how stepping stones can work on a drive
stepping being related to legs not car wheels

if you want a suds drive it is gravel or 2 rows of flags and gravel in-between
if you use stepping stones then the vehicle will move them ,as sure as eggs are eggs

The recommendations you quote are for a drive, not stepping stones as LLL pointed out. Stepping stones for a drive will be a big fail. Think you need to re-think it. On the subject of stepping stones ( for stepping on i hasten to add ) i've used the off cuts of 450 inspection chamber risers cut down to size and filled with grano', ideal in the garden
