I have lived with this problem for 2 yrs and now I'm on the edge! I have an internal soil stack in my bathroom (I have no windows in this room) I think this is used as a vent which gose up into my loft. 2yrs ago I had bathroom cabinets which were built tight around this pipe. Since then everytime I have a shower or use the cold or hot water in the bathroom the noise is terrible- really loud bangs!! So I finally ripped the cabinets out but the banging is still going on - it sounds as if most of the banging is cioming from the loft - any ideas? I have had 2 builders in and they don't know and a plumber who has just done a new heating system for me was sure it would be the cabinets around the pipe but now I just don't know - who do I need to get in???

Hi Ability,
The banging only happens when water is going down a plug anywhere in the bathroom. The waste pipe in the loo also bangs when water is running down the plug hole in bathroom which is next door. The pipe from the toilet runs into the bathrroom through the wall and must be connected to the soil pipe. When I push down on the wate pipe in the loo this seems to stop some of the banging. (I have recently had a new toilet put in but this has not made any difference in fact it maybe be a little worse) Should I ripe open my boxed tile wall under the sink and soil stack and see if anything is amiss ? Any ideas before I have to call the props in so I can have an informed discussion with them - anyway I'm really getting into it and want to solve the mystery- sad I know!
What could it be something to do with the joints in teh pipe work?
