Another gravel driveway - Should i consider using tack coat

Setts and cobbles, tarmac, asphalt, resin systems, concrete whether it's plain, patterned or stencilled, gravels, etc.

Hi All,

I've read the related pages of the main site carefully so hopefully i won't upset anybody!
I have two basic questions about my planned driveway;
1) Would it be worth covering the sub-base with something like tack coat prior to wacking down the gravel?
2) How essential is it to lay a geotextile membrane under the sub-base if the sub-grade is solid, will weeds really get up through 150mm of wacked down type 1

Thanks

1 - NO! Tack coat is used to bond new macadam to old macadam or concrete. It is NOT used to bond gravel to a granular sub-base.

2 - You need the Geo-textile membrane FAQ

Weeds will grow on and through most surfaces given half a chance so using a membrane to minimize this problem is recommended.
