Got ya.
I priced a big job up last year when I was first starting out. The client didn't go ahead with it because of the cost.
Fast forward to this year I was asked to price the same job again.
With me being a year wiser the job came in at 10 grand more than the previous quote.
I told the lady that I was glad that she didn't accept my previous quote because my business would have been over before it had begun.
She replied "I'm not"
Luckily I've not had any jobs that haven't turned a profit but I know we can all get caught out.
I had a right bollocking from my accountant last week as well for not taking money up front on jobs.
Hope you manage to get finished by Friday and make a bit back on your next few jobs Mark.
The pictures did come in handy too btw. One client is going for the 800 course and the other has changed his mind on colour so he can go for 600 courses. Both were very complimentary of your work and expect mine to be as good, lol.

No major issues Simon, but no lucky breaks either.

The bricky buggered off half way through so had to finish the brickwork myself which I don't have the speed for.

And no Tony, unfortunately it was not 50K which I would have more than happy with.

In retrospect I think one of the major issues was the logistics of the site.
The rear garden is around 400m2 and all materials were barrowed in from the front of the house.

23 years in the game and still can't get it right, never mind on with the next one. Thing I'm looking forward to most is working local again :)
Cheers

Looking at the amount of brickwork you had on the job, if it were me I would have been stuffed.
Did you manage to turn any kind of profit mate?

All costs accounted for, materials etc maybe even, but probably worked the last two weeks for nothing.
Could have walked away about four weeks ago when payments made were in excess of the stage reached.

But you can't do that can you!?
I don't think there's anyone in the cabin who would.

Will post some piccies in recent work soon. (gunna get rat arsed tommorrow night) :D

Fair play for sticking with it Mark. My days working as a subby on price work saw me losing a weeks money snagging jobs between 2 and 20.000 m2 especially with clients trying to delay paying on time. At least you didn't turn a loss.
Looking forward to seeing pictures of the finished job.
Might get an award for that one.

mark always worth opening the books so to speak and explaining to the client how it has gone bad for you

I have had 3 in 10 years agree to pay extra when it is black and white that poor weather, bad ground , and other unknowns have knackered the job
(normally paving jobs)
on the flip side sometimes things have gone exceedingly well and if that happens I either do something extra gratis or knock the bill down

it goes in roundabouts ,but experience has taught me that no 2 jobs are ever the same, and if you price on meterage you are doomed

our work is different to yours but if access is bad I add a labourer's day rate for an extra 2-3 weeks when pricing

I quoted a small drive last october
the lady rang up last week and asked if the quote still held?
I explained that everything went up on jan the 1st and its now 20% more but we dont have the time now
c'est la vie

Maybe I'll give it a try Tony, don't like the idea too much though, feels a bit like begging.
It's final payment day today and he's a really decent guy, so we'll see.

I only use meterage to check my calculations.

That small driveway is just what I could do with right now, simple and quick turnover;)

Not started laying yet Mark.
The jobs being difficult with the dig, manholes, drainage, steps, plus my daughter being born and my van breaking down lol.
Hoping to start laying next week.

Look forward to seeing it.

Ask your assesor about cutting. They've done some testing and seems they've found a decent disc.
