Stable ?

Hi Guys, As previously posted, recently laid 22 sq mtrs of Eclipse paving which is flat and looks really cool. This morning I was doing my usual inspection and to my horror, 1 slab had lifted like Atlantis rising from the sea, as the sun came round it settled back perfect. Will this continue to happen after I have pointed or do I need to do any remedial work prior to pointing ? There is 4" of sub base which I wacked down for 2 days, the slabs are laid on 2" of 15:2 sharp sand and cement which was just a little wetter than semi dry. Your advice as always will be much appreciated.

Sounds like frost heave, but I'm surprised to hear it happened on such a construction. If the flags had been laid on clean sand over bare earth, and we had experienced a really hard frost, I could just about understand it, but for just one of the flags to lift, and given the relatively piffling frost we've had over the past week, I am definitely surprised.

Have you tried lifting the flag in question and seeing what's going on underneath? There has to be summat different abuot this one - maybe it's on less sub-base or the bedding is unusual in some way.

Thanks Tony, No I havent had a look underneath as like I say it went back perfect. What I am worried about is that it may happen again when pointed and crack the pointing material, or should it be ok ?

You need to strap a torch onto the end of a 2.2 rifle and sit in a swivel chair on your patio, and wait for that mole jasper carrot style.

See if it happens again over the winter - it might be best to leave it until spring now.
